MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS
ENGLAND AND WALES LABOR’S BIG GAINS NO COMMUNISTS ELECTED (British Official Wireless.) Rec. 1.30 p.tn. RUGBY, Nov. 2. In the municipal elections in England and Wales not all the results of the polling have yet been declared, but the position this morning showed that- Labor retained its majorities in the town councils already under, its control and gained a majority’in many others. So far Labor has gained 443 council scats and lost 44. The Conservatives gained 38 seats and lost 355. Tho Liberals '.find "Independents have, in proportion to their number, met with a similar defeat at the hands of the Labor candidates.
Further returns increase the Socialists’/ sweeping victory in tho municipal elections. They now control 10 London boroughs out'of 28, while throughout the country the Labor landslide continues. Tite''final London results show thatLabor has captured Fulham, Shoreditch, Battersea, Southwark,* Camberwell, Woolwich, Stepney, Islington, Finsbury, Hackney, arid Bethnal Green, and retained Bermondsey, Deptford, Poplar and Greenwich, aggregating 15 councils, one more than the, previous peak period, 1919-22. : _ . . The. most striking victories to-day wore the winning of 37 scats at Finsbury, every seat at Stepney, 34 at Islington* where Labor was not represented on the former council, and 45 at Hackney, compared with one oil the former council. .None of the 62 Communists, including the former member of the House of Commons, Mr. Saklatvala, was elected.
