158 CARS A DAY ON COAST

Details of traffic tallies taken by the Main Highways Board recently were placed before tire Cook County Council to-day by the county engineer, Mr. K. F. Jones. These figures were in addition to those taken by the council’s staff and tabled at the previous meeting, when tho council asked the engineer to secure figures dealing with other points in tho county. The engineer reported as follows : “As instructed at the last meeting of tho council, I obtained the following details of tallies taken by the Main Highways Board in tho county:— “Gisbome-Wairoa, via Ilangaroa, main highway, at 36 mile (Tiniroto), tally taken over 16 hour period for seven days. —Total number of vehicles, 71; number of vehicles per day, 10. This road was officially closed to through traffic at 22 mile when this tally was taken. “Gisbornc-Wairoa, via Morere, main highway, 34.4 mile (Wharerata Hill), tally taken over 16 hour period for seven days.—Total number of vehicles, 408; number of vehicles per day, 58. Gisbornc-Upotiki, via Coast, main highway, at 4.00 mile (Wainui), tally taken over 24 hour period for seven days.— Total number of vehicles, 1105; number of vehicles per day, 158.”
