A CATHOLIC COMPLAINT CAPTAIN COOK’S COTTAGE THREATENED TRAM STRIKE (Elac. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assu.) MELBOURNE, Oct, 15. A complaint by Archbishop Mannix that Roman Catholics arc being excluded from the united thanksgiving service i n Sunday has been replied to by the organiser, who says that Archbishop Mannix was invited to co-operate, but expressed unwillingness to take part. A dispute has arisen between the City Council and the Police Commissioner over the latter’s order restricting evening traffic in the city streets while the Duke is here. The order says that only a single file of cars will be allowed in the city area to witness the illuminations an,d mush pass through without stopping unless attending theatres. The commissioner is emphatic that the order will be enforced.

Yesterday Captain Cook’s cottage from Great Avion, Yorkshire, came into the keeping of the Victorian people. It was built 178 years ago arid it. was transported stone by stone to Melbourne and reconstructed at. Fiizrov Gardens. It was presented as a centenary gift by Mr. Russell Grimwade, a member of a Victorian pioneer family. The cottage has heCti re-assembled in an old English garden similar to its erstwhile setting. There will be no trams to Melbourne or the suburbs to-day, nor will any emergency transport bo provided by the Government. It is understood that the Government is actuated by a desire to refrain from using provocative measures pending the decision of the tramwaymen’s stop-work meeting. Should the men decide to strike, however, the Government- will immediately bring into operation its carefully-organised transport arrangements. Furniture vans, charabancs and all types of vehicles will be pressed into service if the 7500 trnin-wa-vmen decide to strike. The union will advise “No surrender. ’’ The public is viewing the dispute with equanimity, as the railways are not affected.
