ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY
WAIAPU MEETING
(Herald Correspondent.! Tiie quarterly meeting of the Waiapu Acclimatisation Society was held at Tokomaru Bay, Mr. W. Gates presiding over a representative gathering. An appeal for support for fish research was considered, it being decided that tiie society should do its utmost- to help. It was reported that the record number of 2634 opossum skins had been stamped in the Uawa district. The society liberated 56 pheasants during August, and if the present weather continues sportsmen may look forward to obtaining generous bags next season. Several enthusiasts are trying their bands at breeding pheasants, and it is hoped that their efforts will be successful, as the additional revenue from opossum skins will enable the society to purchase more birds in the future. An open season for two months was recommended for the 1935 season. Tiie Mounted Rifles applied for permission to hold riile practice in the, Tolaga Bay township, and it was decided to reply that as tiie area had been declared n ’sanctuary for birds the society had no power to grant permission.
