CO-OPERATIVE CONTRACT
MEN DISSATISFIED
(Per Press Association.) WESTPORT, last night
Dissatisfaction with the co-operative contract system, under which the Westport aerodrome at North Beach is being constructed by the Public Works .Department found concrete expression today, when 15 men who had been engaged ort the work refused to carry on any longer, and waited on the Mayor, Mr. Kilkenny, to represent their grievances to him. * The men contended that the system docs not permit of their earning 5s a day, representing to the three day a week men only 15s a. week, as compared with ordinary relief rates of 30s. The Mayor and three representatives of tho men interviewed Mr. Bascand, Public Works engineer, who, however, stated that the contract system was that which lie had been instructed to inaugurate, and in the absence of instructions td the contrary, there was nothing he could do. . . , As a sequel to the discussions, the Mayor telegraphed to Mr. P. C. Webb, M.P., asking him to interview the Minister immediately, and have the position reviewed, or the men given an opportunity to work elsewhere, or, failing that, that sustenance bo arranged.
