UAWA COUNTY

MEETING OF COUNCIL (Herald Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Uawa County Council was held in Tolaga Bay ou Saturday. Present: Crs. J. McNeil, chairman, E. C. Loisel, 11. P. Barron, J. L. Reeves, C. E. Smith, and P. T. t Weeks. The chairman extended a welcome to Or. Loisel on his return from a trip to Europe, and Gr. Loisel suitably replied. The Gisborne Borough Council extended an invitation to join with the borough in participating in a welcome to the Duke of Gloucester on December 20. The invitation was accepted. The No. 4 District Highways Council forwarded copies of construction and maintenance estimates for the year 1934-35 issued by the Main Highways Board.—These were received. The Commissioner of Crown Lands, Gisborne, advised that it was proposed to ask the Land Board to grant a tempor-

ary grazing right of lots 17 and 19, block VI, Buckley township.—The letter was received. The Commissioner of Unemployment notified that tho question of the allocation has been considered and an improvement was to be made immediately.—The letter was received. The Main Highways Board, Wellington, forwarded an agreement for the repayment of a loan of £3500, repayable in eight years.—Tho seal of the council is to be affixed to the agreement. - The No. 4 District Highways Council advised that the Main Highways Board will subsidise at the rate of £3 for £1 all work carried out as from April 1, 1934, in the way of preparation for sealing as well as for actual sealing work.— The letter was received. The East Coast Commissioner asked for a statement of rates outstanding on certain blocks.—The clerk was instructed to reply. The Presbyterian Church CojfTmittee wrote asking that the charges for electric light be amended.—lt was decided that all churches in Tolaga Bay be charged only for the electric light actually used.

Tenders for supplying dog collars for 1935 were opened, and it was decided to accept that of F. G. Reid, Limited. It was decided to write to the Minister of Agriculture pointing out that as the local stock inspector had been transferred to Gisborne, the council now recommended that the cattle dip at Tolaga Bay be permanently closed. Accounts amounting to £1776 were passed for payment. ENGINEER’S REPORT The report of the engineer stated: — “Secondary highways.—On the Tolaga-Tauwltareparao highway shouldering with papa near the dairy factory and the Waimaunu bridge has foeen proceeded with. Grading side tracks near Messrs. Guthrie’s and Loughcr’s also has been done. It will be necessary to consider the metal supply for topdressing this highway this season. On the harbor highway a small amount of surface work has been carried out.

“Ridings.—Arakihi: The surfaceman has been grading and blinding metal. Tho Public Works Department is making good progress with Kiore road. Hauiti: Ordinary surface work has been continued. Maugatuna: Mr Tautau has a total of oyer 1300 cubic yards of spawls stacked near the Kaiaua beach. It is ’proposed to grade the portion to be metalled and call tenders for carting the spawls on to this section, closing early. Mangaheia: A length of the Mangatokerau road -near Mr Thomas’ has been topdressed with river gravel. Further sections of the road require urgent attention. The track in to Mr Price’s crossing will be opened up and shingle carted out as soon as possible. Mr Dover has obtained the contract for metalling in the gorge and has made good progress, having carted out over 300 cubic yards to dale. Paremata: The re-metalling of the weak section near Air Norris’ has been completed. Tauwharc'parae: The grader has been over all thfe roads, smoothing down, and the drag and two-horse, grader have been run over the upper length. The power grader will be put over the upper length as soon as it is possible to cross the Mangamaunu and get over one or two bad sections. The Public Works Department has let a contract for completing the metal to ILaqnui junction. Proposals will now bo 'prepared for the metalling grant up Hutchinson’s Iliit. Tolaga: Streets have been cleaned up and a small amount of surface work and draining carried out.

“General. —The cattle dip has been refilled. The gate at the dip will be completed this coining week.’’
