DESPERATE MINERS
UNDERGROUND STRIKE RAVING WITH HUNGER (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Tress Assn.) (Received October 16, 3 p.m.) BUDAPEST, October 15. The latest news from the pit says that some of the miners, raving from hunger and thirst, tried to hang themselves and bash their heads against the walls. They have been tied hand and foot to prevent them committing suicide. Others are unable to speak as their tongues are swollen from thirst. Fifty firemen who descended the mine
to extinguish a fire joined the strikers, who have closed the air pumps. The air is steadily becoming more foul. The Danube Steam Navigation Company is the owner of the Pecs mines. They are partly controlled by the British, and partly by the Viennese Bank Credit Anstalt, which the Bank of England saved from collapse. 'Hie company has closed all the pits in the neighborhood, locking out 3500 men. The company says it is unable to increase wages, as it, is unable to sell the oal produced. Twenty-five thousand other miners de-
i(}«l on a sympathetic strike unless tlie. Pecs dispute is settled' within 48 hours.
