HORSE IN DANCE HALL
PROSECUTION OF YOUTH MAG LSTRATE DISMISSES CASE The action of a youth in riding a horse into the Tanea.tua Public Hall during the progress of a fancy dress ball recently led to his appearance in the Whakatane Police Court on a charge of behaving in a disorderly manner. Evidence was given that the youth, who was in fancy costume, brought his horse into the hall to take part in the grand march. The presence of the horse was objected to by the niastej; of ceremonies and by several ladies. When ordered out of the hall by one of the ladies the youth went quietly, leading the horse. His conduct was not unruly.
The magistrate, Air. E. L. Walton, said that, although it had been technically proved that the youth had done something that was contrary to what was allowed, he would exercise his powers and dismiss the information. On the application of the police the magistrate consented to the withdrawal of a charge of behaving in a disorderly manner brought against another young man, who, on the same occasion, entered the hall in the costume of a huntsman and carrying a live pig and a rifle.
