HABITS OF WHALES
SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH BRITISH SHIP’S CRUISE ANTARCTIC OBSERVATIONS (British Official Wireinss.) Roc. 10 a.m. RUGBY, Oct. 14. The royal research ship William Sco'resby, a small vessel of trawler type, specially built for scientific whaling in the Antarctic, is now loading stores on the River Thames, prior to her departure about Tuesday on her fourth commission. - After calling at the Cape, she will proceed to the ice edge in the neighborhood of Bouvet Island and. Underlay Land, Which 1 are ' the chief ' hunting grounds of the floating whale factories, and, if practicable, to, other areas where whales may be found. It is expected that she will be on the whaling grounds for three months without touching port. The experiments to be undertaken are part of a general scheme of investigation on which ■ the royal research ships Discovery arid Discovery 11, as well ,as the William Soorosby, have been employed hn previous commissions, and’ the operations this season will be specially directed to determine the migration of whales. i The investigations are. controlled' by a committee acting on behalf of the Falkland Island Government, under instructions from flic Secretary for the Colonies. The William Scoresby is expected to return in the spring, as will the Discovery 11, which sailed from London in October of last year, and at present is actively engaged in research work in the south.
