DEMAND FOR POTATOES
AUSTRALIAN SHORTAGE UNFORTUNATE EMBARGO (Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. . There is a great 'opportunity in Australia for New Zealand potato grower? at present, if only the tariff negotiations which have bben under way for several months could he promptly completed. •Potatoes are selling in Sydney today at £l9 a ton, while New Zealand fotatoes can be bought in the South aland for £2 10s a ton.
There is no chance of making sales In Australia until the Commonwealth Government again takes up the 'proposals from New Zealand that potatoes should be admitted to the Commonwealth. Much delay was caused owing to the fact that the Australian Ministers were not prepared to complete a treaty until after the general elections. Following the result/-which gave the Government another lease of life, . there had to bo another wait until a Ministry had been appointed. As this was done two days ago, the New Zealand authorities are expecting to make progress, and so far as potatoes are concerned there is a godd chance of a favorable agreement being quickly reached.
