THE BAND CONTESTS

QUICKSTEP COMPETITION MAGNIFICENT DISPLAY VICTORY FOR ST. KILDA (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, last night. Magnificent marchingi and fine playing won for St. Kilda Municipal Band the A Grade military display and quickstep at Athletic Park on Saturday. Twenty-two hands, 11 in A Grade and 11 in B 'Grade, competed during the afternoon and treated the crowd of from 10,0'jG to 12,000 to a splendid exhibition of precise manoeuvring. The work of some of the A Grade bands was spectacular. St. Kilda gained highest points both for music and marching, being 4-j- points ahead of the next band, Invercargill Civic, who won the contest last year. Invercargill’s marching was quite as good as, if not better than, St. Kilda’s, but this band lost valuable marks through setting too fast a pace. The B Grade contest was won by Wellington Boys’ Institute, which gained a clear cut win over Southland Battalion and Westport Municipal. Results were:— A GRADE
