Overhauling Precaution
A PRECAUTION which is often neglected when overhauling an engine is cleaning out of the various oil passages. This is very important, as a considerable amount of sludge, composed mainly of a mixture of dust and extremely fine metal dust from worn pistons, cylinder walls and bearings, becomes deposited. Owing to the centrifugal action of the crankshaft most of this solid matter deposits in the oil passages drilled through the shaft, which should have wire poked through them, followed by a generous supply of petrol squirted through. 'Pile sump and the inside ol the crank case also should be cleaued. If sludge is not removed periodically the oil passages may become completely blocked,'and bearing trouble will result. In cases where splash lubrication is used pump oil through the main oil gallery, and sec Hint it comes out equally freely into each of the oil troughs.
