SHIRT MAKERS
FORCED TO CLOSE DOWN
MANCHESTER, Oct. 25. Khaki shirts manufactured in Japan are being sold on the very doorsteps of Manchester manufacturers at twothirds of the price of the home-pro-duced article. As a result, a number of concerns engaged in the production of these goods have had to close down. The owner of four shirt-making factories stated to-day that, whereas the price of the English article was J-s a dozen, Japanese shirts were now being sold to Manchester retailers at 21s a dozen. “This Japanese competition," he added, “has already compelled me to close three of my works and put my employees on the dole." A retail outfitter also said that during the ta-st few weeks he had been offered Japanese-made bathing costumes at the astonishing price of 2s 7Jd a dozen.
