CLERGYMAN RECANTS
ATTITUDE TO LYNCHING DEEPLY STIRRED AT TIME NEW YORK, Dec. 3. Interesting repercussions of Mr. J. Rolph’s lynching stand occurred today, when Dr. Henry Darlington retracted his praise of lynching. He said he was sorry lie had praised Mr. Rolph, “It was the result of being deeply stirred at the time,” lie said. Dr. Darlington announced his changed stand at the morning services after a group of theological students picketed the Church of the Heavenly Rest, denouncing him. Dr. Darlington, rector of the Protestant Episcopal Church of Heavenly Rest, New York, telegraphed Mr. Rolph congratulations on his support of lynching. He explained that he meant to commend tho change from public indifference to a visible expression that kidnapping must be stopped.
