Mr. George Buckley, conductor of the Auckland Alunicipal Artillery Band has been appointed adjudicator at the New Zealand championship contest to be held at Wellington in February next.

Mr. F. E. Lnttveil, honorary secretary of the Canterbury Cricket Association for the past 20 years, has been appointed manager of the Canterbury cricket eleven which will lour the North Island in the New Year.

Colonel N. W. B. B. Thoms, D. 5.0., late of the New Zealand Staff Corps, has completed his engagement as epmmntidaiit of the Shanghai Volunteer Corps, and will leave for England on December 17 to live in retirement in Kent.

Three well-known residents of the Cambridge district who are nonagenarians, celebrated their birthdays last week. They are Mr. George E. Clark, of William street, aged 93, _ and Mr Andrew Francis Barden, of William street, and Mrs. G. Northern, of Fencourt, aged 90 years. All three arc in good health for their years.

One of the leading figures in the American motion picture industry, Mr. A. AL Loew, of Aletro-Goldwyn-Mayer, passed through Auckland on Friday on his way to Australia in the course of a world tour. Air. Loow visited Auckland last year on a rapid world tour, during which ho and his party travelled long distances by their own private aeroplane. This was an ill-fated trip, as the aeroplane crashed in Africa and the pilot was killed.

Letters to friends in Gisborne from Mr. Cuth. Alorse, the well-known New Zealand horse-trainer who formerly had his establishment at Gisborne, indicate that Mr. Alorse will return to New Zealand on December 28. He will leave Ran Francisco oil December 12, and durum ltis trip to the Dominion the horses Pillow Flight and Tea Trader, In charge of which he went to the United States, will enjoy a spell in California. Tt is likely that Air. Morse will resume operations in California late in March.

The Rev. A. G. Kuyll, 8.A., son of Canon J. L. A. Kayll, has been appointed to a chaplaincy in the Royal Air Force. Mr. Kayll will leave early next year for the Air Force station at Bagdad. Mr. Kayll, who was educated at the Auckland Grammar School and trained for the ministry at St. John’s College, graduated at Cambridge University. For some years he was assistant curate to the Rev. I)r. Waggett, at St. Alary's the Great, Cambridge, and latterly lias been at All Saint’s, Highgate, London.

I Mr. W. .1. Bardsley, president of the New Zealand Baptist Union, will arrive in Gisborne on Friday, accompanied by Mrs. Bardsley, in the course of a tour of the Baptist congregations of the Dominion. Mr. and Mrs, Bardsley will lie the guests of Mr. and Mrs. I'. RToneycliffe during their stay in Gisborne, and will meet various organisations of Baptist Olnireh workers. On Sunday morning Mr. Bardsley will give an address at the Baptist Tabernacle, and on Sunday afternoon lie and Mrs. Bardsfciy will meet the men's and women’s Bible class members respectively. On Monday, at Mr. Toneyellffes residence, there will lie a gathering of Sunday-school officers and teachers, arid on Tuesday Mrs. Bardsley, who rivals her husband in enthusiasm and eloquence, will address the Baptist Women’s Missionary Union, during an afternoon gathering. Tile visitors will leave later in the week for Napier, on a further stage, of their tour. Mr. Bardsley was until recently secretary of the Otago Harbor Board, and is devoting bis retirement to tlje interests of his church, having become president of the Baptist Union at the last conference.
