To-day’s North Island Report, Overcast conditions were reported at Wellington this morning, but blue skies prevailed elsewhere in the North Island. North-westerly gales were blowing at Gape l’alUser and Castlepoint, and light to fresh westerly breezes elsewhere. The barometer had commenced to fall again. Temperatures at 9 o’clock were : Auckland 65 degrees, Tauranga 66, Opotiki 69, East Cape 64, Gisborne 70. Napier 71, and Wellington 62. Rough seas were reported between Cape Campbell and Castlepoint; elsewhere moderate or smooth. Last Night’s Forecast. An anticyclone extends over the northern Tasman and the North Island, while the first of a series of westerly depressions is passing in the south. Winds: Moderate to strong north-easterly to north-westerly, rising to gale force, especially in and south of Cook Strait. Seas : Rougih about Cook and Foveaux Straits ; elsewhere smooth to moderate. Eastern Tasman Sea : Moderate easterly winds backing to northerly and freshening in the northern portion, with moderate seas; fresh to strong northwest winds and rougih seas in the southern portion. Weather: Fair to fine in most districts, but clouding over in the western and far southern parts of the South Island, with rain developing shortly. Warm temperatures. Midday Forecast. General inference.— Pressure is still rather high to the north, hut the first of a series of westerly depressions has crossed the South Island, and a second is now approaching.
