“BELOW DANGER LINE”
UNITED STATES ARMY CHIEF’S PROPOSALS WASHINGTON, Nov. 27. General Douglas MacArthur, chief of staff, in his annual report, said that the United States Army’s strength was below the danger line. “1 consider it of the utmost importance,” lie said, “that this should be rectified without delay. The. United States military strength is seventeenth in the world.”
He recommended an expenditure of nearly £40.000,000 on aircraft, modernisation and motorisation of field artillery, mechanisation, anti-aircraft equipment, general motorisation, maintenance of the National Guard at the existing strength of at least 120.000, and a reserve of officers with two weeks’ annual training for at least 50.000. At present there are about 119.000 oil the reserve of officers.
