CRUISER'S VISIT
DIOMEDE IN THE EAY THE DISTRICT'S WELUOME Within a few minutes of the hour indicated previously by Captain Cosmo Graham, 11.M.b. Diomede dropped anchor in the Gisborne roadstead at 9.45 o'clock this morning, her advent being the occasion of much interest in circles far wider than those in which the movements of commercial steamers are noted. 1 he change for tlie worse :n the weather overnight was rather dampening to the enthusiasm roused in connection with the cruiser’s visit, hut it is anticipated that the facilities to bo provided for visiting the ship will be fully* availed of during the period of the Diomede’s stay in port. Providing the weather conditions remain stable or improve, the cruiser will remain in the roadstead until December 4, and visiting hours will he from 4.15 to 6.15 p.in. daily, with the exception of Saturday and-Sunday, when tile vessel will be open to visitors from 2-pan. to o p.m. Arrangements for the transportation of school children, in parties of 40 and under the charge of teachers, have been made by the Harbor Board, the launch Takitimu having been prepared for this service during the stay of the Cruiser. Adults and children not under the control of teachers will depend on other means of transportation, such as is to be provided hv the Gisborne Lightering Company’s plant. Adequate provision has been made for the entertainment of tho officers and crew of H.M.S. Diomede, and only favorable weather is needed to assure that the visit of the warship will remain another red-letter occasion among the infrequent contacts of Gisborne people with the units of the Royal Navy. A cordial welcome to the port was extended to Cap-tain Cosmo Graham and It is ship’s company to-day, shortly after the arrival of the cruiser, and it is intended to support the welcome by a programme of entertainment that should be of considerable interest to the visitors.
