CRICKET IN GISBORNE

MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE POSITION OF TEAMS OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCES The positions ol the teams to date in the Saturday senior championship and Thursday competitions were announced at the weekly meeting of the management committee of the Poverty Bay Cricket Association last evening, and a number of outstanding performances in representative cricket and competition games were placed oil tiie minutes. The meeting was presided over by Mr. 11. E. Maude, and there were present also Messrs. F. W. Nolan, J. J-. Macdonald, L. H. Thomson, J. W. Blathwayt, A. Bignall, A. R. Baker, and J. M. The positions of the teams were reported to he as follow : Saturday first grade.—High School, .16; City, 13; Old Boys, U; Gisborne Club, 5 ; Turangianui, 6 ; Civil Service, 0. Thursday competition. —R.S.A., 14; Wanderers, 14; Cash Stores, 11; Retailers, 9. Outstanding performances to date wero minuted as follow :

Marist, seven for 36 ; G. Caldwell (Old Boys), v. Gisborne Club, seven for 92; M- Sharp (High School), Poverty Bay v. Waiapu, seven for 51. Mr. O. Brew attended the meeting in connection with his proposal to take a team to Auckland to participate in the Country Week competition at Christmas. It w'as dearly stated by Mr. Brew that in tin* event of any of bis prospective players being selected for Hawke Cup cricket at the same date they would fulfil the Hawke Cup engagement, in priority to the Auckland visit.

A circular letter was received from tiie New Zealand Cricket Council giving tiie grouping of districts for the Hawke Cup elimination matches. A letter was received from Mr R. McDonald, late secretary of tho Wniroa Cricket Sub-Association, advising that his association was not active this season, owing to lack of enthusiasm amongst cricketers in tiie district.

Tn reply to a letter from the association, the* Auckland Cricket Association wrote stating that the six-ball over was played in all two-dav matches under its jurisdiction. Members pointed out that Ihe six-ball over was played in Auckland, Wellington, Canterbury, Manawatu, and Hawke’s Bay, and expressed the opinion that the Poverty (Bay association should fall into line in this respect. It was decided that in conformity with other districts, the six-nail over should be played in all tWo-day matches under the association’s jurisdiction, and the eight-ball over in all one-dav matches. it was resolved to write to tho Marist Cricket Club requesting the club to appoint a junior representative to the management committee. The ground committee reported that the ground and wickets were in splendid order, and that the wooden practice wicket was nearing completion. In this respect it was resolved that a letter of thanks should be forwarded to Mr Short for his assistance in laying down the wooden wicket. A letter was received from the Gisborne Central School stating that owing to lack of practice facilities at the school, it would lie appreciated if the association could provide a practice wicket for the boys. It. was resolved that when the wooden practice wicket was completed the Gisborne Central School should have the right to use it each afternoon from 3 to 4.30 o’clock.

A full report of the proceedings at the biennial conference of delegates held in Christchurch recently was placed before the meeting by the secretary, who acted as the association’s delegate to the, conference. In connection with the Auckland Town v. Country match, the selector, Mr M. Guthrie, nominated W. Carson and G. J. Robertson for inclusion in the Country team. The nominations were approved, and it was resolved that they should be forwarded to the Auckland Cricket Association.

The financial position of the association was fully reviewed by tile chairman, the indications being that the season would be a favorable one.

The draw for the Saturday senior championship competition resulted as follows Third series, December 2 and 16. Civil Service v. City, No. 1 wicket; High School v. Old Boys, No. 2; Mu-nsk v. Turanganui, No. 4; Gisborne Club, a bye. Fourth series, December 9 and 23. Marist v. Gisborne Club, Civil Service v. Turanganui, City v. High School, oh‘ Boys, a bye. The draw for other competition matches this week resulted as follows: Thursday competition. —R.S.A. v. Retailers, Cash Stores v. Wanderers. Saturday.—Second grade : Unemployed v. Marist, at the High School; High School A v. High School B, at the High School. Saturday.—Third grade: High School A v. Marist, at the High School. It was intimated that tho match High School B v. High School C had been postponed in the meantime.

In addition to the senior competition matches on Saturday, Gisborne Club, who have drawn a bve, will meet a team from H.M.S. Diomede. The visiting team will be the guests of the ussociation at afternoon tea, and arrangements have been made for their conveyance from the wharf to the Oval. The match will he played on No. 3 wicket.
