Mrs. E. Austen, wife of Mr. J. Austen, Carroll street, North Clyde, died at her late residence on Saturday at the age of 74 years, after a brief illness. The deceased, who was favorably known in the Gisborne district, had been living here for a number of years and endeared herself to all with whom she came in contact by her genial, kindly nature. The funeral took place on Sunday, the Rev. Mr. Jenkin officiating at Trinity Methodist Church and at the graveside, there being a large number of mourners present. Members of the Manchester United Order of Oddfellows, of which the deceased’s husband was a member, acted as pa 11-bearers. At Napier on Sunday death claimed an old-time YVairoa settler in the person of Mrs. A. Winter (nee, Miss Violet Mayo), widow of the late Mr. A. A. Winter, and brother of Mr. V. E. Winter, of this town; Thu deceased, who was 50 years of age, was a. daughter of a. wellknown Napier family, and with another sister carried on business at Wairoa for some years. After her marriage she assisted her husband in running! a store at. Onouiti. On his death she lived a retired life here for some years and then went to live with a sister in Napier, where she passed away, leaving no children. The funeral took place on Monday afternoon, the Rev. C. J. Mackay officiating at the church and at the graveside. Mrs. E. Beattie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. Browne, who iias been on a liofitlay visit to her parents, lias returned to Christchurch. —Mrs. Sproule’s many friends will regret to learn that she has had to seek admission to the Wairoa Hospital, and at present is seriously ill—Mr. V. E. Winter is reported to be making satisfactory progress in the Wairoa Hospital.—Mr. L. M. Graham is relieving at the local Public Trust office while Mr. McNatty is on leave.—SeniorSergeant and Mrs. 11. C. D. Wade, iormerly of Wairoa, were week-end visitors to this town, accompanied by tlieiy son, Horton; they were guests at tho Ferry Hotel.—Mrs. M. M. Unwin, who died at Ballance on Saturday night at the age ol 74 years, was an aunt of Mr. A. 11. 11. Umvin, of Frasertown. The deceased made many visits to this district, and a wide circle will deeply regret her passing. Mr. A. H. H. Unwin left for Bidlance oil Sunday. Mr. Harold Mayo, of Napier, and , formerly of Wairoa, visited the district this week ill connection witli the funeral of his sister, Airs. A. A. Winter.

The Wairoa Yacht Club’s roll of members now totals 70, but there is a lack of suitable boats to get a race cm the river. There is now one Jellicoe class boat on the river, and another has been ordered, tho latter being a typical craft of the Takapuna class. The efforts being made to popularise the river are highly commendable, and the promoters deserve support. Last Friday evening the Svensen Fours contest on the Wairoa River were continued. Gilligan defeated Helean by three lengths, and Burridge beat Johansen by about a length. Gilligan arid Burridge met on Saturday in the final. The water was choppy, the only calm spots during the whole race being at the start and the finish. Burridge broke a rigger, but kept on, and Gilligan won by a length. The race is to be re-rowed. The final race for old birds, promoted by the Wairoa Homing Pigeon Club, took place on Saturday from Parnassus, in the South Island, to Wairoa, 337 miles. This event was styled the Club Derby and there were 12 starters. G. Zakins’ Bone Dry, BUr. 28inin. was first, followed by W. Hedley’s Butter Bex and Mr. Johansen’s Paint Brush. The lirstnannvl takes the club cup, Mr. Hedley, the Hcdlcy cup, and Air. AL Johansen the Pidduck cup'. Air. Zakris also won the Harker cup.
