NEW DEVICE FOR ’PLANES MELBOURNE, Nov. 18. By taking advantage of a- recent invention, the Commonwealth Government expects to save a considerable sum in making available directional wireless facilities for aircraft engaged on the air mail service between Darwin and Singapore. Tho Minister for Defence, Sir George Pearce, said to-dav that, in arranging the air mail service, the'Commonwealth Government had provided fur directional wireless, but it was thought at that time that it would involve the erection of costly masts at various points. Since, then, it had been ascertained that modem instruments would make this expense unnecessary. Tho recent invention is a compact device carried on the aeroplane. ’1 he instrument was carried on tho Imperial Airways aeroplane Astraea, which recently visited Australia, and it worked satisfactorily. As the instrument is not costly, it may not he long before all civil ’ aircraft will be required to carry it as standard equipment.
