ACCIDENT IN RIVER RESCUE EFFORT FAILS (Per Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., this day. While bathing in a pool in the Mannwntu River at Ballance yesterday, I rone May Forrest, 17, whose parents reside in Palmerston North, got into difficulties and was drowned. Venturing into the current, she was
in trouble and began to call out. At first it was thought that she was joknig, but her father perceived the true situation and called to others to help. George Grindrod, of Feilding, a young man, succeeded in gaining hold of the girl and had almost reached a projection on the bank when it is thought that the girl became restless. Mr. Grindrod was nearly drawn under, be-
ing practically exhausted, and was unable to retain his hold. The girl sank in a deep hole. A search is now proceeding for the body,
