OBITUARY

MR. JAMES McCORMICK (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. The deatli has occurred of Mr. James McComick, aged 70 years, formerly of Leeston Hotel and a keen and successful owner of racehorses, including Tarleton and Nincompoop. One of Ashburton’s best known social workers and a prominent member of the Salvation Army, Mr. William Ilopwood, has died. The death is reported from London of Mr. Lukin Johnston, one of the bestknown Canadian journalists, who has represented the Southern papers in England for a good many years. ' A well-known former Auckland business man, Mr. Thomas Nairn, died in his 73rd year. Mr. Nairn was born in Auckland land for over 40 years carried oil a successful confectionery business. A highly respected and very wellknown resident of Dannovirko, Mr. Anton Jenssen Lorck, has passed away. Bom in Trondhjem, Norway, 74 years ago, the late Mr. Lorck, with his wife, who is a daughter of the late Mrs. Burnell, a member of the well-known Murray family of Canterbury, came to New Zealand about 1893, and settled in i Palmerston North. . j The establishment of the first Euro- 1 pean settlement in New Zealand is recalled by the death in Melbourne on November 31 of Mrs. Mary Anne Elizabeth Cobb, a grand-daughter of 1 the late Mr. John King, one of the three lay missionaries who were stationed at the Bay of Islands by the Rev. Samuel Marsden in 3814. Mrs. Cobb, who was the daughter of the j late Mr. and Mrs. P. H. King, was ► born at Te Puna, Bay of Islands, on J January 16, 1843. In 1832 her grandfather had moved from Rangihoua to Te Puna. It was at Rangihoua that; the missionaries had originally ! landed and there, near the Marsden ! Memorial, in the recently-proclaimed reserve, John King and several of his' children are buried. Mrs. Cobb’s parents farmed at Waiaua, but she , had clear recollections of visits paid to her grandfather at Te Puna. Her ( parents finally made their residence ' at Waiuku, where, about 1862, their daughter was married to Dr. Frederic Cobh, who was then in practice in Auckland. Soon afterward she left with her husband for Victoria, where he established practice.
