EXPLOSION IN MINE
ONE MAN KILLED TWO OTHERS INJURED (Per Press Association.) GREYMOUTH, this day. An explosion occurred in the main level of the Paparoa mine shortly after work commenced at 8 o’clock this morning. . , , Frank McQuaid, 40, a single man.' a native qf Ireland, was killed; Phillip Martin, 40, a married man, had a leg broken and received cuts on the head and hums; and William Walker, 35, a single man, was knocked over by tho force of the explosion and received burns on the arms and head. The men were soon extricated after the dust settled.
The origin of the explosion is a mystery. McQuaid and Walker, workmates, were at the face. \\ alkev left his working place with ,a truck, the explosion occurring during his absence. Martin was working EOytls away, and was knocked over by the truck, which was driven along" the level by the force of the explosion. Approximately 20 men were in the mine at tho time
