TRIBUTES TO PRINCIPALS
’ ’ MAR IT ANA ’ ’ PERFORMANCE An enjoyable function took jilaco at the conclusion of the performance of “Maritana” on Thursday evening, when the members of the Gisborne Choral Society and liie orchestra hold an informal supper on the stage. The president, Mr. Paul Hockley, took the opportunity of expressing the. thanks of the executive for the assistance given by Miss Muriel Smith, Ylr. Mainland L. Foster, the individual members of the orchestra, and the house stall'. Ylr. Hockley mentioned the tine spirit displayed with two prominent conductors such as Ylr. Foster and Mr. Wilfrid Kuhn jiiaying in tho, orchestra uuder thc society's musical director, and hojied that such camaraderie would long continue.
Ylr. Hockley referred briefly to the closing of the sea. ad reminded members that rehearsals would commence again about the end of February next.
Ylr. J. Carrington Wellby was then made the recipient of an acceptable gift subscribed to by individual members of tiie society and “Maritana” principals. Ylr. Wellby, in acknowledging the gift, remarked that he was much surprised and gratified by tile expression of esteem by members, as lie personally considered he had recently made Himself rather unpojiular at rehearsals in an honest endeavor to give the public an outstanding performance of opera work. All present agreed that “Maritana" reflected tho highest credit oil the conductor. and the acceptance of the gift was received with hearty applause.
