RUSSIA PREPARES
STRENGTHENS DEFENCES PEIPING, Oct. 16. Russia lias strengthened her Far Eastern defences in preparation for a possible war with Japan, a Soviet Russian spokesman said to-day. The spokesman, a member of the Russian Embassy, admitted informing his Government that Chinese travellers arriving here reported that three Russian airplanes reconnoitered Jehol for three hours, flying off to the northward when Japanese anti-aircraft, guns opened fire. Commenting on reports that Russia was concentrating military forces on the ilanchurian frontier, the spokesman said : . . “It is no secret that Soviet Russia is notably strengthening its Far Eastern defences. '• “In the event of hostilities, the Soviet military establishment will present -both offensive and defensive surprises, especially in connection with aviation and with land and sea defences in the Vladivostok area.
