70 PERSONS SENTENCED LIQUOR “PROTECTION” GANG (Received No. 25, 3.30 p.m.) PHILADELPHIA, Nov. 24. A State Senator, J-ohn McClure, today was convicted as leader of the alleged Delaware County liquor “protection” organisation and given a sentence of 18 months’ gaol, and a £2OOO fine. Ninety-six persons were indicted, of whom 70 were sentenced, among whom was the chief clerk of the. Pennsylvania House of Representatives, McClure’s private -secretary, numerous detectives, ward leaders, and bootloggers. The trial lasted over seven weeks. It was charged that the* political organisation led by the Senator • collected protection from sly grog shops, illicit still operators, bootleggers, smugglers, gamblers, and disorderly house proprietors. It was estimated that the organisation, which had been in existence for 10 years, collected over £44,000 in its peak year.
