NEW CARGO VESSELS

N.Z. PRODUCE TRADE , EIGHT SHIPS TO BE BUILT | Tho new 13,500 tons motor-ship 1 which has been ordered by the Shaw, avill and Albion Company is the third vessel the company is having built for the New Zealand trade, two ' now being under construction. This latest addition to the fleet will be . specially constructed for the chilled meat trade and will be very fast, her speed being between 16 and 17 knots. She will thus be one of the fastest vessels in the service between Great Britain and New Zealand. Last May the company placed an order with Messrs. Harland and Wolff, j Belfast, for two 12,000-tons motor- ! ships, and the keels of these two vessels were laid in June. Both will j have a service speed of between 14J ! and 15 knots. With the completion of j tire three vessels the Shaw, Savill and ' Albion Company will have a fleet of I 23 steamers and motor-ships. ■ Altogether, eight new vessels have been ordered for the New Zealand service. In addition to the three for the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company, the New Zealand Shipping Company has another two ships under construction and one for the Commonwealth and Dominion Line is nearly completed. The Blue Star Line has ordered two new vessels. The two motor-ships being built for the New Zealand Shipping Company will be of 15,000 tons each and will be lilted with more powerful engines than the Rangitata and her two sisterships. They will be 500 ft in length and will have a service speed of 15i knots. The Commonwealth and Dominion' Line’s new vessel has been named Port Chalmers, and she is expected to do her trials in December. She is 480 ft in length, with a 05ft beam and 43ft 10in in depth. Her tonnage will i be 8800 gross and her designed speed ] is 15J knots on a -draught of about; 27ft. Tho two new vessels ordered by the Blue Star Line will be of about 15,000 : tony arid will have a service speed of 1 17 knots. They will probably be the i largest and fastest vessels in the re- ( l'rigerated trade. It is hoped they will be ready for service next October. All the netv vessels ordered for the New Zealand refrigerated trade are being equipped for the carriage of chilled moat.
