AMERICA WET ON DEC. 6
DAY AFTER LAST STATE VOTES WASHINGTON, Oct. 7. December G is destined to become an historic date in the United States. That is the day on which prohibition will be repealed. On December 5 the last of the four remaining States will have voted on the issue. In the meantime the Government is turning its attention to the revenue aspect of the new situation. It is said that pending the meeting of Congress in January, when new duties on spirits, wines and beers will be formulated, those existing before the advent of prohibition will return to force. They are: — Distilled spirits, £1 5s per gallon. Still wines, (Is 3d per gallon. Sparkling wines, £1 10s per gallon. Deer, 5s per gallon. To benefit home industry, such as California wine, the new taxes are expected to vary considerably. The main purpose will be to raise the tax on strong liquors to as high a point as the consuming public will pay without resorting to the “bootlegger.’’
