AVENUE OF TRADE
POSSIBILITIES AT NOUMEA The desirability of promoting trade between New Zealand and New Caledonia is stressed in an editorial recently published in the newspaper FranceAustrale. “Although New Zealand is as close to ns as Australia is.-’’ the article slates, “she is practically unknown to us. Trade between New Zealand and New Caledonia is nil. New Zealand is infinitely sympathetic toward the French, and on her shores we receive an unforgettably warm welcome. New Zealanders like the French, and in their charming country, with its temperate summers and cool winters, the tourist is welcomed. “Why then is there no commerce between these two countries?’’ the paper asks. It expresses the opinion that Jack of initiative is the real cause. “From New Zealand we buy nothing,’' the paper adds. “Sometimes New Zealand buys guano here. Trade is virtually non-existent. Yet New Zealand produces everything we lack, even to coal, whieh at present we buy from Australia. On the other hand, we produce everything New Zealand lacks in the way of tropical products, such as coffee, copra, cocoa, and especially oranges, bananas and pineapples. All that is now required is definite action to open up trade.”
