OPERATIONS TO CEASE
BOBBY CALF INDUSTRY HOME .MARKET GLUTTED (Per Press Association.) HAMILTON, this day. A decision to cease operations next week in connection with the bobby calf industry is announced by Mr. W. A. Phillips, chairman of directors of the New Zealand Co-operative Pig Marketing Association. Mr. Phillips stated that advice had been received that the British market was glutted with supplies, and rather than ask farmers to accept lower prices than thoso at present offering, it had been decided to discontinue. Nearly 8000 bobby calves have been killed at the Haiti freezing works this season, which was the first in which Gisborne farmers had participated in the industry. Previous attempts to establish the industry in the district failed, until the New Zealand Co-operative Pig Marketing Association commenced this branch of its activities here a few months ago. Market prospects earlier in the season seemed to point to better prices than last year, and the association was advancing from 3s to 4s per head to Gisborne suppliers at one period.
