aid to prosperity The development of gold mining in Rhodesia has meant the economic salvation of tho territory in recent years, according to Mr. C. R. Peacock, who arrived at Auckland by the Marama. Mr. Peacock has resided in Southern Rhodesia for the last 30 years and is actively interested in gold mining. Gold had been found m fairly appreciable quantities, Mr. Peacock said. It was practically all reef mining, and the average value of the ore at normal prices was about 25s a ton. lhe ordinary processes of mining, milling, amalgamating and cyaniding were used, and most of the work was done by native labor. , . „ ~ . Chiefly as a result of tho gold industry, Rhodesia was one of the most prosperous parts of the Empire to-day. There was a 15 per cent, premium tax levied oil all gold exported. Tho tax had proved a valuable source of revenue, and tho Government closed its last financial year with a surplus of about £BO,OOO. It was anticipated there would be a larger surplus this year.
