, The executive committee of the Now Zealand University Senate to-day conferred the degree of doctor of literature On Mr, A. G. Butchers; the degree of bachelor of dental surgery on Mr. 11. J. Whitehead; and the degree of bachelor of engineering, civil, on Mr. T. O. Young.—P.A. The president of the Gisborne Workers’ Association has requested us to state that whilst his association does not wish to interfere with the work of the Unemployed Workers’ Association, it is not associated with that body in an effort to raise funds on behalf of men refusing to proceed to work in camps in the country. The week-end gathering of oarsmen at the Gisborne Bowing Club’s annual picnic 4ft i .the island in the Waimata River sh&uld lie a representative one. as many veterans of the club’s active list Have* signified their intention to attend, and the present strength of the club membership will be almost in full force. The function, to which reference is made in the advertising columns of this issue, is the second of a series commenced last year, but it has associations reaching back into the early years of the club’s existence, when picnic parties at the isjand and at the Hole-in-the-Wall were regular features of aquatic activities in the town. An important change in this year’s arrangements is that the pjenic ground will be reached from the Kaiti side of the river, by way of the Hole-in-the-Wall road. Ample shelter will bo available for pieknickers from the sun and wind, and the committee Will furnish adequate supplies of hot water, milk, tea and sugar. Competil tions for veterans and members, on and JS jn the water, will help to brighten the day’s programme, to which the committee has given much thought.
