DUMPING BY AMERICA
DANGER TO BRITAIN QUESTION IN THE HOUSE (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. In the House of Itepresentatives yesterday, Mr. A. E. Jull (Coal., Waipavva) asked whether, in view of the serious and deliberate depreciation of the American dollar, and the possible repercussions on prices of exported manufactured goods from United States and competition with British manufactures, would the Government take action to safeguard importers who were holding, and desired to continue importing, British goods. The lit. Hon. J. G. Coates said the Government already had statutory authority to impose special duties to meet difficulties, in the nature of exchange and the dumping of imports from any country with depreciated currency. The position was being carefully watched at the present time, and appropriate action would be taken if required. It must be remembered that the avowed purpose of the current action in the United States was raising the external price level, and to the extent that this was attained it would offset the effect of the exchange depreciation.
