WAIAPU HOSPITAL BOARD

ADDITIONS AT TE PUIA ARCHITECT’S VISIT AWAITED (Herald Correspondent.) Additions proposed for Te Puia Hospital will be more extensive than originally thought, according to a statement made at the monthly meeting of the Waiapu Hospital Board ou Monday. There wero present: Messrs. A. J. 11. Ivirkhain, chairman, A. W. Kirk, A. G. Richards, W. H. 0. Johnston, and A. 15. Williams. With regard to the proposed additions to the hospital at Te Puia, the chairman said that he had considered the details since the previous meeting of the Hoard, and it appeared that the work to be done would be more extensive than had been originally proposed. Apart from the actual extra accommodation for patients, the board would have to consider the advisability of extending the patients’ clothes store, the matron’s grocery store, the laundry, the domestic sleeping quarters and the domestic sitting-room. It was agreed that no action be taken until the Health Department’s architect had visited the hospital.

The Director-General of Health wrote acknowledging the financial statement, which showed that patients’ payments were in excess of the estimate. The director-general also advised that the car for the district nurse at Tikitiki was now on the way from England. After a letter was considered from the director-general regarding the scale of fees for private wards, the board decided that a fee of 15s per day, with a rebate of 2s, should he charged for patients requiring private rooms at the hospital.

An account was received from the Cook Hospital Hoard for £462 up to September 30. Arrangements for providing a shed for the nurse’s car at Tikitiki were left with Mr. Rickard.

The report from the maternity homi showed that eight patients were ad niitted, six discharged and four ic mained.

The Te Puia Hospital admissions totalled 31, two died, 27 were discharged and 19 remained. The matron reported that Sister Small was on extended leave owing to ill-health. Nurse Steele was on leave for a few weeks owing to sickness. Miss Rona Rendon, Gisborne, had ioined the staff as probationer, Nurse H. Macfarlane having left to commence training at the Auckland Hospital. The district nurse at Tikitiki reported having attended six Europeans and 45 Maoris. She visited seven Maori pas and five Maori schools, and collected Cl in fees. The district nurse at Te Araroa reported having attended three Europeans and 52 Maoris. She visited six Maori pas, and collected £1 3s in fees.
