AMATEUR ATHLETICS

NSW SEASON OPENED FIRST EVENING MEET Proposed floodlights The Gisborne Amateur Athletic and Harrier Club opened its summer’s programme last evening with the first of its season’s track meetings. The weather became cold and threatening towards the close, but this did not spoil the gathering. , The events were held on the Childers road reserve, as a result of settlement being reached in negotiations with the trustees. The track and sprint course were recently mowed, and presented gopd, surfaces, which should improve with attention as the season proceeds. Apart from the several gpod performances put up, much interest was dis played the meet, which might prove to be the last of the late afternoon gatherings to be held by the club, which is considering the installation of floodlights so that the programmes can lie got off after dark. Already, one floodlight has been erected, and tried out, the results were satisfactory enough to suggest that four such lights should be sufficient for the club’s purposes. A decision on thefatter is expected at a meeting of the to-night. Entries for last evening’s meet were • satisfactory for the first of <the season, and performances were also as gjood as might be expected. Times were not particularly fast, but should improve after ths competitors have passed the “rusty’* stage. Finishes in the sprints were close, and both eyd@ races were won by only small margins, although the juniors found it difficult to get over the ground without wobbling. The Half-mile Flat Handicap resulted in a win for the virtual scratch man, A.. Young, who led into the straight, and beat off 0. Wellington by 10yds. The men’s relay race was a good one, jfc. Grant’s team winning by only 2ft., after leadingi by several yards at one stage. All events on the programme were for male members of the club.
