ROWING

a.KC. FIRST TRIALS R.. NICOLL WINS FINAL Setting a fast, stroke at the start and never relaxing at any part of the course, R.-- Nicol stroked his crew 1 to course, R. Nieoll stroked his crew to borne Rowing Club’s First Trial Fours, contested on the Taruheru course last evening. The race, which was rowed under first-class conditions in regard to water, had aroused a good deal of interest, a point to which attention was drawn being that of the eight men engaged in the two crews, all but, one was under ill years of age. The contest w-as not. productive of the best class of oarsmanship, due to the fact that neither stroke gave his crew- a chance to lengthen out. The sprint course of three-quarters of a mile barely gives a crew time to get its second wind, and with half the course finished, the finalists were getting a little ragged. However, they stuck to their task with keen deters mination, and right through to the finish the competition was unflagging. , The finalist crews comprised E. Nieoll, str., T. Alexander, W. Holmes and W. Owen; and G. Bruce str., D. G. Papprill, R. Kinder and J. Boag. The crew stroked by Bruce gained a canvas at the start, but was gradually overtaken by Nieoll, who' maintained a punishing stroke to securo the lead. For a quarter of a mile, Nieoll hold an advantage of half a length, and on the inside of the long bend between Reliance street and Derby street he extended his advantage to a full length, Bruce sprinted strongly from Derby street to the finish, and again cut the lead to half a length, but Nieoll pulled away with the last dozen strokes, and bad a little clear-water between the boats as they crossed the line.
