MOTOR TRANSPORT

POPULAR DIESEL TYPE EXHIBITION AT OLYMPIA G9-SLATER RAIL COACH (British Official Wireless.) Rec. 10 a.m. RUGBY, Nov. 2. The great advance of the Diesel, or compression ignition, type of engine as .applied to motor buses and coaches and goods transport vehicles is one of the most striking features of the commercial motor transport exhibition, which opened at Olympia to-day. One luxurious 30-seater coach is shown which runs at a fuel cost of R 1 per mile. Self-changing gear boxes are fitted to many of the passenger coaches exhibited, some having eight different forward speed ratios. Tho biggest exhibit is a 69-seater rail coach, fitted with the latest typo of London bus engine, similar to that with which a speed of 106 miles an hour was recently attained at Brooklands. There are on the British and Continental markets .'id makes of automotive Diesel engines, comprising (52 different types. During the last, 18 months there has been rapid development in the design and building of comparatively high-speed Diesel engines for automotive work. It has been authoritatively stated that there is hardly a major automobile engine maker in the world who is not studying the design and performance of this type of power unit, and indications are that most of the major problems associated with high-speed Diesels are being satisfactorily solved. An idea of the running economy of some of the latest British Dieselengined trucks may be gathered from the fact that one test truck, weighing with fuel and pay-load 25,287)11., was recently driven over a distance of nearly 15,000 miles at an average speed on the open roads of over 40 m.p.h., on a fuel-oil consumption of 10.3 m.p.g. Other large trucks with Diesel power units are capable of 12 m.p.g.
