FURTHER RESTRICTION

BACON FOR BRITAIN COMPULSORY ACTION OBJECTIONS IN DENMARK (British Olhciftl Wireless.) Received 10 a.m. RUGBY, Oct. ML The Danish Government represent!!- ■ fives resumed conversations tills morni ing at the Ministry of Agriculture 1 with Mr, W. L. Elliot, Minister of ■ Agriculture and officials of bis department, together with those of the Foreign Office, the Board of Trade, and the Department of Overseas Trade. The question under discussion is that of a further restriction of imports of Danish lmcon into the United Kingdom. Under the agreement ratified last May, Denmark was allowed to send not loss than 02 per cent, of the total of permitted imports of bacon from foreign countries. The United Kingdom Government later imposed a reduction of imports, and a further reduction of 1(1 per cent is now sought, as it is felt that otherwise ilie British producer will have difficulty next, spring in disposing of his products. It is reported from Denmark that the proposal for a further restriction has caused dismay in that country. NO AGREEMENT REACHED At the conclusion of the negotiations no agreement was reached for a voluntary reduction by lfi per cent of Danish bacon exports to Britain. . During the 1 afternoon, Mr Elliot met the representatives of'Holland, Poland, Latvia, Estonia, Sweden, Finland, Russia, the Argentine, ami the United States, and explained the reasons necessitating a curtailment of foreign bacon supplies. An official statement later issued by the Minister stated: “Having regard to the large volume of contracts entered into by the home producers for the delivery of pigs to bacon factories during the four months, November to February, it is necessary to secure a further reduction of 16 per cent in supplies of bacon from foreign sources. Proposals to that end were placed 'before the representatives of the Governments concerned, and while some were prepared to accept, others felt unable to do so voluntarily. Mis Majesty’s Government, therefore, decided to proceed in accordance with the Agricultural Marketing Act, and an order effecting the necessary reduction of foreign supplies as from November 1, to take effect at the earliest practic- 1 able date, will be made in a few davs. 1
