CRUELTY TO ANIMALS

STARVED TO DEATH “A SICKENING CASK” (I’cr l’rcss Association.) INVERCARGILL, last, night. Describin'* the details as “nauseating,” .Mr. E. C. Levvey, S.M., delivered a scathing condemnation of the action ot t,wo men who were charged in the Police Court this morning with cruelty to animals. “The court becomes hardened, liis Worship said, “but this case is sickening.” William David Keillor, of Isla Bank, pleaded guilty to three charges of failing to supply cattle with proper and sufficient food. Similarly charged, George Aitken, who was in charge of the cattle, pleaded not guilty. It was stated that three animals had been found dead. The defendant Aitken said he had done his utmost to save the cattle. Ho bad written to the inspector of stock at Invercargill to seo about feed. His Worship: And in tho meantime the cattle were dying. The defendant reiterated that he had done everything lie could. He could not accept the offer of a neighbor, as the cattle were not his. His Worship : It would serve you right if I sentenced you to a term of imprisonment to show you that animals have feelings as well us you, and must lie attended to. The defendants were convicted and ordered to come up for sentence within 1?, months if called upon.
