“A GOOD WORK”

I CRICKET UMPIRES POVERTY BAY BODY ANNUAL MEETING HELD The Poverty Bay Cricket Umpires’ Association, which iias iiiled an important position in Gisborne cricket circles for the past two years, held its annual meeting last evening, when Mr. C. L. Lord presided over a very large attendance of members. The membership ut the association was increased by one during the evening by the admission of Mr. E. Moir. Inter alia the second annual report mentioned that letters of appreciation of the services rendered by the umpires at representative and club matches had been received. Discussions on rulings and problems of cricket had been carried on at meetings held during the whiter months, and in this respect the association was indebted to Mr. G. Ualliday for his lectures. The members in general were to be congratulated upon their regular attendance and punctuality at all matches.

The association was indebted also to Messrs. V. C. 11. Mitford, 11. E. Maude, and A. C. Woodfield for financial assistance, to Mr. 11. V. Bell, manager of the Gisborne branch of the Union Steam Ship Company, for the use of the meeting room, to the Poverty Bay Cricket Association, and to the press.

“It is generally. recognised that this association is carrying on a work in the interests and for the improvement of ciicket in this district, and new members will be heartily welcomed,’’ the report continued. The departure from the district of the Rev. W. J. Elliott and Messrs. George Price, W. Sharp, and R. D. Rust was referred to with regret, the report remarking that the loss of theso valued members would be felt very much. With the assistance of old and new members, however, it was hoped that the association would be as strong a body as ever. Tho balance-sheet showed that tho year had commenced with a small credit balance, and had closed without alteration in the state of the association’s finances.

The following officers were elected : Patron, Mr. V. C. R. Mitford ; president. Mr. 11. E. Maude; vice-presidents. Messrs. C. L. Lord and A. C. Woodfield: hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr. G. V. Lynex; hon. auditor. Mr. J. Jon nings; delegate to Poverty Bay Crickel Association. Mr. A. Baker; chairman of committee, Mr. C. Halliday; timekeeper Mr. W. J. Town.

Votes of thanks were passed by acclamation to the ladies who had provided afternoon tea for the umpires, to the groundsmen for the courtesy they lmd shown, to Mr. W. J. Town for his work as official timekeeper, and to the press.

A former member of the association, Mr. T. Sharp, attended the meeting, and mentioned that he had been given a cordial reception by the Auckland Cricket Umpires’ Association, and had been appointed as an umpire at Eden Park. Mr. Sharp added that as an umpires’ association the Poverty Bay organisation compared verv favorably with other similar organisations in New Zealand.
