HORSE IN THE WAR
ADDRESS TO JOCKEYS SYDNEY, St'pt. Ilk Sir. Bnixner, Minister for Transport, spoke to apprentices in Ike jockeys’ room at the Baud wick racecourse on ‘‘The Australian Horst l in Hie. War.” Sir Samuel Hordern, wiio presided, said that it was one of the most interesting addresses he had ever heard. Australians were described by Mr. P.ruxner as the best housemasters in Ilic world, and the Arabs as the wojst. Want of water was the trouble in Palestine, said Mr. P.ruxner. He had known horses (here to go without a drink for SO hours. In heavy shell lire the horses were inclined to get together. They had great intelligence, and knew that tin' shell made a lot of noise, but that what they had to fear was machine gun fire. Whenever they heard the ‘‘zip zip zip” of the machine gun they bolted. Mr. Brii.xner said that Australia would have done much better with her horses if she had gone in for only three sorts-, the thoroughbred, the pony, and the Clydesdale. No fewer than 480.000 horses that left Australia were doomed never to return, said Mr. Bnixner. They were shot when the war was oyer, and he had seen soldiers with teslrs in their eves as though they had shot thaw liest friends. ‘‘And." said Hr. Bnixner, ‘‘so they had.” ‘‘Hook at that old fellow,” raid Mr. Bvuxncr. referring to the picture of a thoroughbred that went right through the campaign in Palestine. ‘‘Hook at that head —there isn't anything better looking, even man or woman, anywhere. And. note the intelligence. ’ ’
