BRITISH RAILWAYS
BENEFIT BY LOWER FARES
LONDON, Aug. 17. The prospects of British railways show signs of brightening, and traffic returns for bank holiday week, made public to-day, were considerably higher than during the corresponding week last year. All four systems showed a substantial improvement. Freight returns on the London North-Eastern and Southern Railways showed an increase, while losses on the Great Western and London, Midland and Scottish were less- than expected, in view of the fact that the week had one working day less than last, year. Over the. fortnight including the holiday the four companies together increased their takings by £IOO,OOO over the figures for 10112. ‘•The attempt to raise necessary revenue by higher rates failed," the Times commented on the financial page, ‘‘and circumstances compelled the railways to approach the problem from a different and more businesslike angle—namely, reorganisation to improve their efficiency and encourage traffic by cheaper, instead of higher, rates. This policy gives promise of success."
