BOOSTING THE DISTRICT

GISBORNE AD. CLUB PROPOSAL BEFORE COUNCIL The proposal put forward by the Forrest Advertising Agency for the formation of a “Gisborne Ad Club to make the amenities of the town and district known throughout the Dominion came before tho Borough Council at Us meeting) last evening, having already received the support of the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce. The council resolved to receive a deputation of those interested to discuss arrangements for the campaign. The proposal was set out in the following letter from Mr. E. W. Forrest: — “Into this town, which is created for the vacationist, comes a handful of visitors every summer. To swell this number to hundreds, perhaps thousands, I suggest the formation of a club to be known as the Gisborne Ad Club, and the appointment of a committee and an organiser. The object of the club would be to advertise Gisborne, encouraging not only New Zealanders but also overseas tourists to spend a portion of their holidays in this delightful town. “Gisborno holds everything that is dear to the holiday-maker. Here the. sun shines golden in midsummer, and we can boast beaches and scenic resorts equal to anything elsewhere in New Zealand. The roads both north and south of Gisborne provide more comfortable travelling) now, and the completion of the new coastal route between Hicks Bay and Opotiki will undoubtedly attract many motorists. With the influx of hundreds of visitors our town will benefit. Hotel proprietors would find their houses in greater demand ; out litters, provision merchants, restaurants, and all. business people would profit by tho increase in tourist traffic. ' “Advertisements featuring illustrations of 'Gisborne’s popular beaches, picnic resorts, sports grounds, etc., would bo displayed in leading North Island newspapers, while other forms of publicity would 1m; considered.” In the event of tho council agreeing to give its support to the proposal, the writer inquired whether the council would he prepared to arrange to receive a deputation of those interested with a view to discussing the organisation of tho campaign. “Here’s a chance for you to put Gisborne on the map,” said the Mayor, Mr. John Jackson, and Or. H. H. DeCosta agreed that the proposal should receive consideration. On the motion of Cr. 11. E. Maude it- was unanimously resolved that the council should receive a deputation.
