AID TO FARMERS
MALT EXTRACT DUTY RETENTION REQUESTED (Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, this day. Before the Tariff Commission to-day, the retention of the present tariff of 20 per cent., or 2d per lb. on malt extract was claimed by the Dunedin Brewery and Wilson Malt Extract Company. Mr. C. A. Wilson said that as dairy factory owners claimed their right to be regarded practically as a primary industry, so did they claim a similar right. It was unwise on the part of New Zealand farmers to demand a reduction of the duty on malt extract, which was going to penalise New Zealand barley growers in favor of foreign-grown grain. The witness took exception to a suggestion that New Zealand extracts were lower in quality than imported, and was prepared to submit extract for a comparative analysis with the English importation by an independent analysis. There was no hope of carrying on without the duty.
