The rush in Wellington to take advantage of the building subsidy has been intense during the past few days. To-day, the final rush provided 21)1 applications, mure in one day than in the month previous lo the intimation that the scheme was to close down. The total estimated cost of the works covered by to-day’s applications 'was £50,265, the estimated labor cost £17,164, and the estimated subsidy
The Now Zealand totals are not yet available. Applicants are allowed lo exercise their rights in every city, town and village up till 5 p.m. to-day, so that there is bound to be a stream of applications received by the. Uncim ployment Board for. the next day or two. The work of going through these applications, classifying them, and securing the, board’s approval or otherwise, may easily take over a week.
Up till Friday last the total number of applications received by the board from till parts of New Zealand were .17012, representing a total expenditure of £2,607,000. That means over £2,000,000 for labor, the subsidy on which will run into six figures. If is quite to be expected that the total estimated cost of buildings received up to to-day and including all over the country, will exceed the. £3,000,000 mark. CHRISTCHURCH FIGURES TWO LARGE UNDERTAKINGS (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, last night. To-day there was a last-minute rush of applicants for the building subsidy. Included was au application for a joib worth £2,1,000 for winter show purposes and another for £IO,OOO, the purpose for which was not disclosed. To-day the applications numbered 272 and yesterday 241. The value represented was £160,880, with a wages cost of £63,335. The total in Christchurch to date is 1242 applications, valued at £718,416. with a wages cost of £252,262. The approvals number -160 and the refusals 35.
