CROWN TENANTS
HEAVY RATE ARREARS The Taunuiga County Council Ims senl a letter to the Commissioner of Crown Lunds, Auckland, giving a list, of unpaid rates due by Crown tenants. “You will see from (lit; foregoing that- the position is most unsatisfactory, and with the continual requirements in the matter of interest, and repayment of reading loans and road maintenance indebtedness, creates a serious position for the council,"-said the county clerk, Mr. 11. Lewis, in the letter. “1 would appreciate your reply ns to the action, if any, vour department, proposes regarding the matter of rate arrears, Admitting that Crown tenants maybe hard up, 1 submit- that surely their land is capable of producing .somewhere near wlmt adjoining lands do, and that, in many eases the arrears are too large. Your department has a remedy, for there are land seekers who might, justify their ocupancy of, say, half these non-producing areas, and present occupiers might, probably do better on a lesser area, which they could farm."
