GALE IN AUCKLAND

MINOR DAMAGE DONE siiipping buffeted WARSHIPS STAY IN PORT (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this 'lay. Tho violent easterly gale which raged throughout the week-end abated earlv this morning, but intermittent rain continue.;. The steamer Karetu, front Suva, ran into the storm at 4 o’clock yesterday morning, and some of her cargo of bananas and other fruit shifted in the hold, and was smashed. The ship was struck by an extra big sett and a big pul of boiling soup was hurled off the galley stove, scalding tho cook about tile back. Tho steamer Narbada encountered stormy weather all down the coast on Saturday and though she arrived at d o'clock in the afternoon, it was two hours later before site could be berthed. The steamer Canadian Victor, from Montreal, arrived yesterday morning. The port health officer made three attempts to hoard the ship from his launch, but failed, ami the ship was not berthed till this morning. 'The cruisers, Dunedin and Diomede, due to sail this morning, postponed their departure till conditions derated. Damage done on shore by the storm was chitdly conlined to wireless aerials, verandah awnings, and .guldens. Fruitgrowers report less damage than was expected. At Takanini training track, the gale ri'pped the roof off horse stalls and hurled timber and iron 7f>yds. The damage is estimated at £IOO.

DANGER OF FLOODS TE AROHA STORM WORST FOR MANY YEARS (Per Press Association.) TE AROHA, tins day. Overnight, To Arolia experienced the worst storm for many years. Rain is still falling, and country roads are under water. The Waihou River is rising at a rate, of 18in. an hour, and' soon will overflow its banks. The flooding of lower portions of the, town is inevitable. During the night trees were uprooted, but no serious damage is reported. LARGE SIGN CRASHES DAMAGE TO BUILDING (Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, this day. A high wind last night caused tho crash of tv big expensive electric advertising sign of a railway train erected for file publicity branch of tho railways on top of a. five-storied building in the city. It fell on to an adjoining building, partly damaging two chimneys and tho roof. Tho sign is a badly tangled mass of metal.
