PIGEON FLYING

RACE FROM MOTUHORA The Gisborne Flying Club opened its old bird racing season on Saturday with a race from Motuhora over an airline distance of 40 miles. The birds flew under fair conditions, and a keen race resulted, every member clocking in within live minutes of the winning bird. Tho placings and velocities were as follow: R. P. Sheppard’s w.e. Snowy-, 1059.6yds per min., 1 ; F. B. Wildish’s blk. p.c. Wee Pat, 1051.35yds per min,, 2: T. D. Baker's m.h. Silver Clohd, 1038.33yds per min., 3. Next week the club will hold a from Whakatane to Gisborne. RACE FROM NAPIER The second race of the season under the control of the Poverty Bay Homing Pigeon Society was held on Saturday from Napier, an airline distance of 84 miles. The weather was fair for flying, and in consequence the velocity of the winning bird was 1292.7yds per min., comparing favorably with the record velocity of 1308yds per min,, established by J. Forster’s two birds. S. Bishop's success with Bine Daniel was a. very popular win, as it was Bishop’s first victory. A large number of birds were entered for the race, and the result was as follows:—S. Bishop’s b.b.c. Blue Daniel, 1; J. Forster’s Shin Bonaim and Black Prince, equal, 2; F. Dunstan’s Flying Star, 4;W. Marshall’s Foreign Queen, 5; W. Dunstan’s White Wings, (i; M. Sharp’s The Nun, 7; ,T. McLean’s Blue Streak, 8. The next race will be from Takapau, and entries will lie received at the club rooms at Stephenson’s Store, Peel street, up, to 8.30 p.m. to-morrow. The society’s yearling championship is to tie held on Saturday, September 30, for the Forster <lup, and all members are assiduously training their birds for this event, one of the major races of the year. Last year’s winner was L. Jackson, with .1. Forster runner-up.
