At the end of a tow-rope the old Melanesian steamer Southern Gross set off on her last)voyage on Friday afternoon, when she was towed from the Prince’s wharf, Auckland, with the intention of having her placed ashore for (final stripping. When the steamer Mamari arrived at Melbourne from London last week, few recognised in her the ghost of a wellknown Australian troopship and migrant vessel —a former White Star liner. The Mamari has become a steamer of many names and many flags. She was launched in 1911 as the White Star passenger liner Zealandic for the trade between England, South Africa and Australia. During the Great War she was a troopship, and after the declaration of peace she was actively engaged in the migrant trade. With a dwindling of the passenger trade her passenger accommodation was dispensed with and she became the cargo vessel Mamilius, running under the flag of the Aberdeen White Star line. With a further shuffle in the British shipping world she has become the s. Mamari, and under this name she is paying her first visit to Melbourne. Sho will flv the Aberdeen Commonwealth flag to Sydney, and will return to London via New Zealand under the auspices of the Shaw, Savill and Albion Line. A number of the officers and crew of the steamer Mamari are from the 56,620-ton' liner Majestic.'
